We serve the non-profit animal welfare community through a one-of-a-kind business model, providing low-cost boarding and veterinary services exclusively to such organizations. Under the direction of our Lead Veterinarian and in coordination with Heidi’s Village Leadership Team, our Associate Veterinarian is responsible for the delivery of compassionate, top-notch medical care to cats and dogs in our fear free practice. No two days are ever the same and our veterinarians see a variety of cases, from routine preventative care to surgeries and, at times, urgent care. Our care caseload provides the perfect combination of challenge and diversity, with medical care that includes diagnostics, dentistry, radiology, and surgery.

Our Associate Veterinarian partners with our clinic manager and veterinary technicians/assistants in the delivery of the highest quality medical care possible for newly rescued/sheltered/fostered pets. Not only are we looking for qualified experience but, equally important, we need the qualities found in certified animal lovers – dedication to deliver compassionate care! The successful candidate provides leadership for all clinic personnel and medical expertise to the entire Company and will contribute to our cohesive and collaborative relationships with leaders across a variety of other departments.

Schedule:   Flexibility to create a collective schedule that effectively/efficiently manages public clinic hours, as well as the medical needs of boarding animals

Clinic Hours:       7:30am – 5:00pm, Monday – Saturday (Closed Sundays & Major Holidays)

Public Hours:      9:00am – 6:00pm, Monday – Friday (Closed Major Holidays)

                           9:00am – 4:00pm, Saturday – Sunday (Closed Major Holidays)

Partner Hours:   6:30am – 6:30pm, 365/Year (Some Major Holidays Limited)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development, oversight and effective execution of all medical protocols, guidelines, and standard operating procedures to promote the humane care/feeding/welfare of shelter animals in our care, including but not limited to boarded animals, medical fosters with chronic illness or disease, emergent situations, and humane euthanasia decisions.
  • Compassionately deliver quality service in preventative care appointments; in house (boarded pets), in hospital and outpatient soft tissue surgeries, dentistry, radiology, urgent care situations at times and other services as directed by the Lead Veterinarian.
  • Monitor for and aid in the response to potential zoonosis or other illness/outbreaks in our facility.
  • Ensure accurate and timely medical record-keeping for all animals in our care, including but not limited to surgical, complication, mortality, and controlled drug logs and statistics for patients.
  • Assist our Lead Veterinarian and Practice Manager in the oversight of clinic staff (including relief, students, and/or interns) on all medical matters as well as day-to-day business issues such as scheduling, staff performance, training, and development.
  • Support all staff, and Rescue Partners, to ensure sheltered animals’ medical needs are addressed safely, timely, and effectively.
  • Build and successfully maintain positive and collaborative relationships with our rescue partners’ primary medical volunteer staff.
  • Ensure observance and compliance with all applicable federal, state, county laws, regulations, and ordinances inclusive of OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain professional liability insurance at levels sufficient to meet minimum requirements recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association
  • Represent the organization in the community through participation in local events, as needed
  • Other duties as self-identified or assigned

A successful candidate possesses the following skillsets, attributes, education, and/or experience:

  • Licensed Arizona Veterinarian; complete/maintain all professional requirements for active/good standing licensure and insurance
  • Possess or have the ability to obtain/maintain requirements of a DEA License
  • Excellent, demonstrated medical and surgical skills
  • 3+ years’ DVM experience
  • 1+ years Leadership experience desired but not required
  • Animal welfare industry experience, knowledge, or interest a plus
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, DVMs, and teammates to build a results-driven, team-oriented environment
  • Value and support a culture rooted in positivity, continuous learning, and intra/cross departmental teamwork
  • Proven organizational skills and effective communication skills
  • Demonstrate initiative, capacity to think outside the box, and willingness to do what’s right in any given situation
  • Ethical person who possesses good emotional intelligence and conflict management skills

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Fast paced with frequent and unplanned operational challenges and interruptions
  • Collaborative environment where employees are expected to assist others regardless of job title or function
  • Frequent exposure to animal noises, odors, bodily fluids/excrement, and dander
  • Work is performed in a potentially high decibel area, with varied temperature control (including in/outdoors), and with safety equipment often required
  • Regularly required to stand/walk on all types of surfaces – slippery, uneven, and rough
  • Must be able to actively stand/walk/bend while handling a wide variety of size/strength/temperament of animals
  • Frequent lifting/handling/controlling animals/materials weighing 50+ pounds safely
  • Available by phone after hours for post-surgical complications/emergencies; rotational basis with other DVMs
