Shelter Veterinarian/Clinic Supervisor

Under the direction of the Director, this position is responsible for the medical health and well-being of shelter animals, including but not limited to sterilization, surgical procedures, prescribing and administering medications, managing animal health, forensic clinical examinations, necropsies, rabies quarantines, performing necessary euthanasia according to established protocol, and ethics of the shelter medical practice. This position is responsible for the supervision of the Veterinary Clinic staff and clinic activities, directing veterinary medical care related to shelter animals, and implementing practices and protocols related to shelter medicine. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently licensed in the State of Missouri to practice veterinary medicine and hold a current DEA license. A minimum of five years of professional veterinary medical experience is preferred. Must be skilled in animal handling and have knowledge of a variety of animal species and their health, care and behavior. Experience in basic staff management and the appropriate methods and means of dealing with human behavior situations in a variety of circumstances. Must possess ability to work in and lead a high-volume, fast-paced clinic environment that provides quality veterinary services. Must be proficient in oral and written communication, computer usage, and the use of basic software programs. Ability to multitask, prioritize, manage time efficiently and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, stressful setting. Must possess a valid driver's license and complete required NIMS level training within the first six months of hire.

Physical Demands: Strength and agility sufficient to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds with reasonable accommodations. Standing on feet for 8 hours per day; extended periods of walking and animal handling. Ability to handle and provide medical care for animals of various species, size and temperament, including aggressive and dangerous animals.

Typical Working Conditions: Possible exposure to difficult public contacts. Inside animal shelter environment. Work is performed in a clinic/shelter setting. Frequent exposure to animals of all types and temperaments, zoonotic diseases, potentially hazardous work areas, animal feces, dirty or unsanitary conditions and caustic chemicals. Noise levels in the shelter vary but may be moderate to high at times.
